Which drone and helicopter models to choose ?
Whether you choose a helicopter or a remote-controlled drone, you are sure to have an amazing time flying in the air. While they may seem very different to look at, these two machines have similar attributes. Both vehicles require some training before they can be flown with skill. This is why it is recommended to start with small and light models, and to practise indoors to avoid potential harsh weather conditions that could cause damage.
When it comes to the helicopter, opt for a bi-rotor model, which has two rotors that turn in opposite directions to guarantee its stability. Gradually, fixed-pitch and variable-pitch helicopters offer more fun with more possibilities but they are more difficult to fly. Whether you are a beginner or expert, the weight and size should be considered. The bigger and heavier the drone, the more agility it will require.
What you want to do with either of these model vehicles will be the most important factor in your choice. A competition remote control helicopter does not require the same features as one for leisure. If you love mechanics and are looking to make your own adjustments, you will probably prefer to buy a fuel-powered model that you can assemble yourself. The type of drone you opt for will depend on whether you want to use it to fly in your garden or to capture the stunning scenery around you. In the latter's case, you should focus on the quality of the images, and therefore on the choice of the onboard camera.
When thinking about the above, don't forget to also consider how long the model can fly for.
What regulations must be respected with drones and helicopters ?
For both drones and helicopters, you are subject to very strict legislation defining the flight conditions of your model aircraft. The difference for drones is that the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has set a limit of 800 grams maximum, above which they must be registered on the public civil aviation website AlphaTango. What's more, you will also have to take some online training to fly it. It is forbidden to fly over people and you must always keep your drone or remote-controlled helicopter within sight. You are also forbidden to fly over sensitive sites or public places in built-up areas and gatherings of people or animals. Finally, it is forbidden to fly at night, near airfields, and at an altitude of more than 150 metres.
Furthermore, if you have a drone or a helicopter equipped with a camera or a GoPro, you must ask for the authorisation of the people concerned by any filming.
