When I started flying thermal-powered model aircraft, I didn’t realize how important fuel really was. And yet, whether you use a glow engine or a gas engine, choosing the right RC engine fuel is what guarantees an easy start, a well-tuned engine, and above all... consistent enjoyment every time you fly.

Here’s a simple, practical guide based on what I’ve learned through experience — so you too can find the right mix at the right time.

What are the different types of RC fuels?

There are mainly two families of fuels used for RC thermal engines.

First, there’s nitro fuel (glow fuel), used in engines with glow plug ignition. It’s made from methanol, a small amount of oil (castor or synthetic), and a percentage of nitromethane, which boosts power. It’s what I use for my 1/8 cars, planes, and nitro helicopters.

Then there’s gasoline-based fuel, used in larger engines with electronic ignition. These engines are generally more powerful and often found in larger-scale models or brands like EPHIL.

Each has its advantages, but what matters most is to adapt the fuel to your engine — not the other way around.

Nitro fuel: the go-to option for small thermal engines

Personally, this was the first type of fuel I ever used. It’s also called “glow fuel” and it’s ideal for small 2-stroke engines from 1.5 to 3.5 cc.

Nitro fuel is a delicate blend of three key ingredients:

– Methanol: the base. It provides the main combustion energy.
– Oil (castor or synthetic): lubricates the engine during operation.
– Nitromethane: increases power, improves throttle response, and makes the engine easier to tune.

I often use fuels from Optifuel or Model Technic. Both brands are known for consistent quality, purity, and blends that work especially well with off-road models or demanding engines.

Understanding nitromethane percentages

Here’s where you don’t want to improvise. The nitro percentage isn’t just a number — it influences the entire behavior of the engine.

– 10 to 16%: great for break-in or gentle use. The engine runs cooler, more stable, and lasts longer.
– 16%: ideal for sport and hobby use. That’s what I use for my 1/8 buggies with great results.
– 25% or more: meant for competition. You get more punch, but engine wear increases and tuning becomes more sensitive. Make sure this level is allowed in the country where you race.

I strongly recommend following the engine manufacturer’s specifications. Too much nitro can be counterproductive, especially if the engine isn’t built for it.

Choosing the right fuel for your engine and use

If you’re just starting out with a glow-powered RC plane, a fuel with 16% nitro and 18% synthetic oil (like from Model Technic) will work great.

For a 1/8 nitro buggy, I prefer 25% nitro fuel, like Optifuel Race Blend, which delivers solid power without compromising engine life.

During engine break-in, I recommend using fuel with more oil and perhaps reducing nitro to 16%. This gives deep lubrication without raising the temperature too quickly.

Gasoline fuel for EPHIL engines

If you have an EPHIL brand engine, be sure to respect the recommended fuel mix. These engines run on gasoline — but not just any kind.

You should use unleaded 95 or 98 gasoline, but not SP95-E10, which contains ethanol. For break-in, mix the gasoline with 3.5% 2-stroke oil. Once the engine is broken in, switch to 3.3% oil.

For oil, EPHIL recommends two premium options:
– Motul 800 Synthetic Racing 2T
– Stihl Ultra High Performance, 100% synthetic

Personally, I use Motul 800. Combustion is clean, the engine runs smoothly, and I’ve never had any build-up issues.

Storage, safety, and maintenance tips

Good fuel will keep well... if stored properly.

– Keep it away from light, in a cool, dry place.
– Always seal the container tightly after use.
– Avoid temperature changes — they can affect the mix.
– Never store fuel inside your model’s tank between runs.

And of course, follow transportation rules. Nitro fuel is flammable and must be carried in approved containers — especially when traveling by car.

Making your own RC fuel: good or bad idea?

Some experienced hobbyists mix their own fuel. I understand the appeal, but I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s complex, risky if mismeasured, and can be unstable.

Even a small mistake in nitro, oil ratio, or methanol purity can damage — or destroy — your engine. It’s much better to trust brands like Optifuel or Model Technic, who control their formulas and raw materials with precision.

FAQ

What nitro percentage should I use for a 3.5cc engine?
I suggest 16% for general use. For racing, you can go up to 25%, but make sure your engine can handle it, and adjust tuning accordingly.

Can I use RC car fuel in an RC plane?
Yes, as long as the engine is compatible and the fuel contains enough oil. Just avoid fuels that are too “dry” for aviation engines.

What oil should I choose for glow fuel?
I prefer synthetic oils, which are more stable — like those used in Model Technic blends. Castor oil is good for break-in, but it leaves more residue.

What’s the difference between nitromethane and methanol?
Methanol is the main fuel that burns. Nitromethane adds power to the mix and makes tuning smoother and more consistent.
