Without a good radio, it’s hard to improve, enjoy yourself, or progress with confidence. So today, I’d like to give you a full, simple overview to help you make the right choice.

What is an RC transmitter in modelling?

The transmitter, often just called the "radio", is simply the interface between you and your model. It’s what allows you to control the model remotely—move forward, turn, take off, land, perform loops, or stay level in flight.

It works in tandem with a receiver installed inside the model. A touch on the stick, a finger movement, and the signal instantly travels to the receiver, which triggers the servos or controllers based on your input.

It’s discreet, intuitive once you get the hang of it, and above all… essential.

What is an RC transmitter used for, and who needs one?

If you fly a radio-controlled model—whether a plane, helicopter, drone, car, or boat—then yes, you need a transmitter. Without it, you can’t control anything.

But not all transmitters are created equal. Some are made for a specific use (like pistol grips for RC cars), while others are called multi-model radios, and can handle planes, gliders, multirotors, or even several different models with the same unit.

If you’re a beginner, you’ll need something simple and reliable, something that helps you learn. If you’re more experienced, you’ll probably want advanced features, mixing capabilities, or the ability to save multiple configurations.

In every case, it’s best to choose a radio that fits what you fly… and what you might fly later.

Key features of an RC transmitter

Here’s what I always look at before recommending a transmitter—and what I suggest you pay attention to as well:

Number of channels: it’s a bit like the number of strings on an instrument. For a basic plane, 4 channels are enough (throttle, elevator, rudder, ailerons). But if you want flaps, air brakes, or other features, go for 6 or more.
Frequency: today, the standard is 2.4 GHz. It’s reliable, interference-free, and supports easy pairing. Forget the old MHz systems.
Mode 1 or Mode 2: these are two stick configurations. In Mode 1, throttle is on the right stick. In Mode 2 (most common in France), it’s on the left. It may seem like a small detail, but it’s crucial for your flying reflexes. Telemetry: some radios give you live data like battery voltage, altitude, or speed. Not essential when you start, but very useful later.

How does the radio and receiver pair work?

They’re an inseparable duo. Most transmitters come with a compatible receiver. That’s what you install in your model.

The first step is binding—getting them to recognize each other. Once that’s done, the signal becomes exclusive, secure, and resistant to interference.

They also need to speak the same protocol. Each brand has its own system: FRSky, Futaba, Spektrum, Protronik… all different. If you have a radio from one brand, you need a compatible receiver (or sometimes a specific range).

Finally, range is a key factor. Most 2.4 GHz radios offer enough range for casual flying. But for slope soaring, FPV, or large models, a long-range system can be reassuring.

How to choose your transmitter based on what you fly

Your intended use is where it all starts. Here’s what I recommend depending on your setup:

Beginner plane: choose a 4 to 6-channel radio, simple, with minimal menus. What matters is clarity and stability.
Glider: mixing functions and flight phase programming are a real plus.
Helicopter or multirotor: you’ll need more precision—quality sticks, fine settings, and a highly responsive radio.
RC car or boat: here, we’re usually talking about pistol grip transmitters, not stick radios. There are also very affordable combo sets to get started.

Lastly, I recommend thinking long-term. A scalable radio is one you’ll keep for years, even as your models change. It lets you program several setups, manage complex features, and progress without having to buy all over again.

Essential accessories for your transmitter

Once you’ve chosen your radio, think about what you’ll need around it for a smooth experience:

Extra compatible receivers, so you can equip multiple models without changing transmitters.
Batteries or packs for the transmitter: some use standard AA batteries, others use rechargeable LiPo or NiMH packs. I always suggest going rechargeable—it’s more practical and eco-friendly.
A carrying case or protective bag, especially if you’re heading to the field regularly. A transmitter is a delicate instrument.
An RC flight simulator, which you can connect to your radio. It’s an incredible tool to learn to fly without damaging your model. Just plug the radio into your PC and practice like you’re flying for real.

What’s the best transmitter for beginners?
I recommend a simple but scalable radio. The PROTRONIK PT6 is an excellent choice: intuitive, well-designed, and it’ll grow with you.

What’s the difference between Mode 1 and Mode 2?
In Mode 1, the throttle is on the right stick. In Mode 2 (the most common in France), it’s on the left. It affects your flying reflexes, so choose what feels natural—or what you’re more likely to learn easily.

How many channels do I need for an RC plane?
