RC jet: electric or turbine, how to choose the right one?

Since then, I’ve flown several, and with every flight, I get that same rush — adrenaline mixed with technical precision. If you're here, it's probably because you're torn between an electric EDF jet and a turbine-powered model. So let me walk you through it — simply, honestly, and with the benefit of my own experience.

What is an RC jet?

An RC jet is a model aircraft designed to replicate the look and feel of a real jet. It can be powered either by an EDF unit (Electric Ducted Fan), which is a small electric fan enclosed in a duct, or by a real miniature gas turbine, producing raw thrust, sound, and heat — just like the real thing.

What sets a jet apart from a traditional RC plane? Speed, of course, but also its streamlined shape, aerodynamic precision, the unique sound, and that feeling you're flying something truly alive, fast, and unforgiving.

EDF jet or turbine jet: the key differences

Let me be direct — we’re talking about two very different machines, in both complexity and price.

An EDF jet, like those from FREEWING, is lightweight, easier to maintain, and much more budget-friendly. It’s ideal for getting that jet experience without a steep learning curve. Most have a flight time of around 3 to 6 minutes, and while the sound is electric, some models do a pretty good job mimicking a jet-like whoosh.

A turbine jet, like those from BLACKHORSE, is on another level. These are actual gas turbines running on kerosene or Jet-A1 fuel. They're powerful, loud, and incredibly realistic. But they require commitment: more equipment, more money, and much more technical understanding. Maintenance is also essential and ongoing.

So, EDF or turbine? If you're new to jets, EDF is the smarter choice. If you're already experienced and ready for something truly intense, the turbine route will blow you away — literally.

Which RC jet should you choose based on your level?

If you’ve never flown a jet before, don’t jump too fast. A small EDF jet, especially a delta wing or high-wing configuration, is a great way to get started.

Gear you’ll need to fly an RC jet

Having the right jet is only half the equation — you need proper gear too.

For EDF jets, I recommend:

High-capacity LiPo batteries (6S or 8S depending on model)
Smart charger
Minimum 6-channel radio
Reliable high-speed servos
A gyro system for extra flight stability (especially for beginners)

For turbine jets, it’s a whole different checklist:

Fuel pump
Ignition system
Startup station or ground support gear
Proper fuel tanks and valves
And a healthy dose of focus before every flight

Maintenance and safety: what to know

With jets, there’s no room for error. I always run through this checklist before flying:

Tight screws and linkages
Control surface movement
Landing gear status
Battery charge or fuel level
CG (center of gravity) — crucial for any jet flight

EDF jets require less maintenance but still demand care. Turbines, on the other hand, need routine inspections: clean filters, check sensors, calibrate fuel pumps, test ignition — it’s more hands-on, but absolutely worth it.

Where can you fly an RC jet?

With some EDF jets reaching 200 km/h, open space is a must. For electric models, a large open field may be enough — but a certified RC flying club is always the best option.

For turbine jets, flying in a registered club is mandatory in most countries. You’ll need authorization, insurance, and sometimes even training certification depending on local laws. And honestly, it’s safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

What to keep in mind before buying an RC jet

Flying an RC jet is a milestone in your hobby journey. It requires commitment, proper setup, and an understanding of your aircraft’s behavior. But the thrill? Absolutely unique.
