How to build a boat model?
Building a boat model requires precision and rigor. It often requires several hours of passionate and sometimes relentless work, evidence of your desire to obtain the most faithful boat model possible to the image you had in mind and proudly display it on the shelves of your library.
The best way to succeed in building your boat model is to arm yourself with patience and follow the construction instructions step by step. You should also have the right tools for modeling and have a comfortable space where you can see your boat model take shape.
To achieve the desired result and not get discouraged, choose to assemble a boat model suitable for your level. Check beforehand the average completion time and the level of difficulty. For example, the static boat model MOBY DICK 1/35 is intended for beginners to start learning modeling unlike a boat model like the static boat Flying Cloud 1/96 sailboat clipper type for which many more hours will be needed.
In addition to the level of difficulty, choose to assemble a boat model that you like and that you want to see among your collection items. However, stay simple if you are a beginner by preferably choosing models with one deck and/or mast. Turn to the models in the MINI MAMOLI range that reproduce famous ships and will inspire you in your work.
Before starting the construction of your boat model, make sure that your box contains all the necessary elements for the realization of your ship. If any elements are missing, do not hesitate to contact us so that we can remedy this as soon as possible.
Then carefully browse through the plans as well as the instructions of your boat model. The former allow you to make the assemblies. Quality plans provide precise instructions. The latter, on the other hand, accompany the plans and help clarify them through textual information, numbered drawings, or legends.
By following the provided instructions step by step, you can only succeed in building your boat model!
What are the techniques used to build the hull of a boat model?
There are three main techniques used in building the hull of a boat model:
Mass construction.
Slice construction.
Frame construction.
Mass construction is arguably the simplest. The hull is carved from a block of soft wood. The block is roughed out to create the boat model's hull.
Slice construction is mainly used in modeling for the creation of small static boat models. Planks are assembled following contour lines. The whole is then sanded to give the hull its final shape.
Frame construction involves creating the skeleton of the hull using elements called keels and frames assembled together.
How to paint a boat model?
The painting stage is essential, as the visual quality of your work depends on it. In addition to choosing paints, you need to be very precise in painting with detailed elements that make up your boat model.
We offer a wide range of paints for RC models as well as varnishes to enhance your boat model. Prefer acrylic and water-soluble paints from the LIFECOLOR range available on our site. To guide you, the colors to use are generally specified in the instructions for use. This way, you achieve a more lifelike result!
To facilitate the paint application, use an airbrush set containing an airbrush.
Once your boat model is painted, apply a matte acrylic varnish if it is an older model and a glossy one if it is a newer model. When the varnish is dry, you can sand the whole, apply a new coat of varnish, and sand again for a more aesthetic finish.
How to motorize a boat model?
It is possible to motorize our radio-controlled boat models. To do this, simply order a suitable motor to connect to the propeller shaft. We offer a wide range of radio-controlled electric or thermal motors that will bring your beautiful boat model to life and provide enjoyable moments.
If possible, choose a motor mount from the same brand as the motor. The hole spacing must also match the motor mount.
The stern tube should be glued so that the end of the propeller shaft points into the vessel. The motor is then fixed to the assembly. Ensure it remains in line with the propeller shaft. All that's left is to test your boat model on calm water!
How to showcase your boat model?
If you are passionate about the maritime world and specifically naval modeling, you are keen to display your finest pieces. It is indeed not worth putting in so much effort into making your boat models if not to proudly showcase them and pass them on as true collectibles to your children.
The ideal way to showcase your boat model is on a shelf in a bookcase, on top of a chest of drawers, or on a mantelpiece. Avoid cluttering the space to highlight it as much as possible.
To keep it looking splendid, dust it regularly. The sails of boat models can be hand-washed.
If you use your model on the water, make sure to dry it thoroughly before storing it, as moisture damages wood. For optimal drying, detach removable parts.
