Which remote-controlled helicopter to choose according to your level?

Remote-controlled helicopters are small gems whose prices can soar. They are indeed relatively fragile devices that can be subjected to crashes, by hitting walls or trees, or simply due to mishandling that would make them fall to the ground. Parts may need to be changed regularly. Hence the importance of focusing all attention on the robustness of the device! Some remote-controlled helicopters have an alloy chassis to make them more resistant to impacts.

Others are equipped with an integrated gyroscope that enhances the stability of the device during movements, to once again avoid regular falls. In simple terms, this piece acts like a spinning top by maintaining the orientation and angular velocity of the helicopter using the principle of conservation of angular momentum.

Remote-controlled helicopters are lightweight (opt for a device weighing less than 2kg for easy transport) and therefore sensitive to the wind. This is why indoor use is preferred. An exception is made for variable pitch models intended for experienced pilots, as their settings are complex and their weight is higher. In detail, these are equipped with a main rotor that can perform between 2,000 and 3,000 revolutions/minute, and a tail rotor to effectively control the blade inclination. To start a pilot career, we recommend the coaxial helicopter which has two rotors rotating in opposite directions, facilitating hovering. It is a good choice for beginners, but you may quickly be left wanting more with more experience. You can then turn to the fixed-pitch remote-controlled helicopter which provides more sensations with its main rotor (up to 800 revolutions/minute) and a tail rotor, and offers the possibility of making inclined turns and true translations.

What criteria to consider when choosing your remote-controlled helicopter?

Another criterion to consider before making your choice is the number of channels of the device. In other words, the number of possible movements with it. A two-channel remote-controlled helicopter can perform two types of movements: vertical and rotational; that is, ascend and descend, and turn right or left. With three channels, you can also move forward or backward. With four channels, it is possible to fly in translation to the left or right. Six channels are needed to imagine aerobatic maneuvers.

The importance of the device's maneuverability and the enjoyment of the controller is even more important when the remote-controlled helicopter is intended for a child.

Lastly, and not least, you will consider lastly the question of autonomy and recharging possibilities of your remote-controlled helicopter. Most are electric. While some fuel models exist, they are often delivered in kit form, heavier and more expensive. Electric remote-controlled helicopters can fly on average 7 to 8 minutes. In such conditions, ordering a second battery to extend the fun is not a bad idea, as you also have to consider the battery charging time which can be long and exceed 1 hour in some cases. Some models can be connected via USB, providing more freedom.

Regarding radio-controlled helicopters, since the end of 1990, Scientific MHD has been the distributor for France of the Japanese brand HIROBO recognized as a leader in the market for competition and leisure helicopters. This Japanese brand synonymous with high quality is also appreciated for its accurate models manufactured under EUROCOPTER or BELL license. Scientific MHD was also the distributor for France of the E-SKY brand during the advent and boom of electric helicopters from 2006 to 2015. The appearance of small electric models in the second half of the 2000s allowed the democratization of radio-controlled helicopter practice.

What size of radio-controlled helicopter to choose?

There are several sizes of radio-controlled helicopters. To characterize the size of an RC helicopter, the term "class" is generally used, represented by a "C" followed by a number indicating the size of the device. Remote-controlled helicopters come in many classes (class 100, 400, 700, etc.). The higher the number, the larger the RC helicopter.

The number indicated refers to the diameter of the main rotor of the remote-controlled helicopter, which provides a good overview of the actual size of the helicopter.

It is recommended for beginners to choose a small remote-controlled helicopter to start with. A small RC helicopter brings many advantages for getting familiar with piloting. A small-sized helicopter will first allow you to practice flying in small enclosed spaces, especially if you are afraid of losing control of your device and seeing it fly out of your sight.

Choosing a small-sized RC helicopter also often means reduced weight, which is preferable for starting to pilot. Indeed, a lighter remote-controlled helicopter will be easier to handle in confined spaces. However, if you want to fly a remote-controlled helicopter in open spaces, its excessive lightness may be a disadvantage in strong winds. Therefore, pay attention to all flight parameters before starting to pilot your RC helicopter.

Furthermore, choosing a small and light helicopter will prevent causing damage around you if you lose control. Crashes are inevitable for beginners in piloting remote-controlled helicopters. By choosing a small helicopter, you will not risk breaking something around you, or simply breaking your RC helicopter when crashing.

Finally, the advantage of a small remote-controlled helicopter is that it can be transported wherever you want. You can easily store it in your luggage to fly wherever you go.

If you are already familiar with piloting remote-controlled helicopters, preferably choose a medium-sized model that will offer you more possibilities and will look more impressive in the air.

Small RC helicopters are not designed to be piloted in difficult outdoor conditions. Wind strength can make their piloting complex, even impossible. If you want to fly outdoors with a remote-controlled helicopter, opt for an outdoor RC model. Larger and more robust, these models require greater piloting skills and are therefore not suitable for beginners.

How to learn to pilot a remote-controlled helicopter?

To learn to pilot a remote-controlled helicopter, choose a small-sized model and initially fly in enclosed spaces. You will not be destabilized by the wind force and can calmly learn to control your helicopter. A small remote-controlled helicopter will also give you more confidence to start with, as you will not fear breaking something at home.

The best way to learn to pilot a remote-controlled helicopter is to practice every day, accepting that you may not succeed on the first try. You will inevitably crash during your first flight attempts and may not be able to stay in the air for very long. You will hit the walls of your room and the objects in it until you find the right balance in your piloting.

By practicing regularly, you will be able to better control the sensitivity of your RC helicopter's remote control and be more precise in your maneuvers. There is no need to attempt too complicated maneuvers at the beginning. Start by performing a simple hover and then learn to pivot with the helicopter. Only then will you be able to make moving turns by tilting the remote-controlled helicopter like a seasoned pilot.

To progress as linearly as possible and not get discouraged, set goals for each flight. These goals can be very diverse. It could be a goal of beating a duration in each flight session (staying in the air longer than in the previous flight), or a more playful challenge like trying not to touch any wall or object during your entire flight time.

If you still cannot progress as you wish, you have the option to acquire a 3D flight simulator, which will help you gradually familiarize yourself with different piloting techniques.

How to maintain a remote-controlled helicopter?

Remote-controlled helicopters are quite fragile pilotage devices due to the many elements that compose them. Indeed, an RC helicopter is not as compact as an RC car, and its different parts are more vulnerable to the various impacts they could suffer if your helicopter collides in flight against walls or objects.

The most fragile parts of a remote-controlled helicopter are the blades of its main rotor. Nevertheless, an RC helicopter remains fragile in general. Even the most robust remote-controlled helicopters cannot withstand a violent crash from several meters high.

If one of the parts of your remote-controlled helicopter were to break, you can easily replace it with a suitable part by simply disassembling your RC helicopter.

Apart from the occasional repairs that you may need to make, it is essential to properly maintain your remote-controlled helicopter after each use. In addition to general cleaning of your RC helicopter after each flight to keep it looking good, you should also make sure to check the condition of each of its parts and possibly apply a suitable product to correct any visible defects. There are products available that will allow you to remove scratches from the frame of your helicopter or clean certain elements without affecting the electronic system.
