How do you choose your drill bit ?
There are many different types of drill bits on the market, so you’ll need to know which ones to use. Before choosing a particular diameter, think about what materials you will be drilling. Titanium (gold colour) drill bits are most often used for drilling metal surfaces. Wood is drilled with a spur point bit, also known as a wood or dowel bit, masonry bits are used for drilling concrete.
Once you have this information in mind, you can choose the right size drill bit. For model making, we recommend using a hand drill holder and you can find various sizes on our website: 0.99 mm, 1.19 mm, 1.37 mm, 1.473 mm or 1.778 mm. Our hand drills are suitable for bits ranging from 0.3 mm to 1.5 mm. With this tool, you can make accurate holes in those hard-to-reach places! They are user-friendly, which is something you will definitely appreciate after hours of work dedicated to your models.
To facilitate your project and provide you with everything you need to drill holes precisely without errors, Scientific MHD stocks various drill bit sets in several sizes. You’ll find sets of bits with diameters from 0.4 mm to 0.9 mm (20 drill bits), and from 0.35 mm to 1.2 mm (19 drill bits), compatible with Squadron Tools equipment. If you don’t need a full set, you can complete your bit collection with those sold individually in 1.5 mm, 2.5 mm, 3 mm diameter.
How do you look after your drill bits ?
As with all tools, it’s important to look after your drill bits properly to keep them in good working condition and maximise their lifespan. Clean your drill bits regularly and you can also improve their performance by adding a little oil for precise and accurate cutting.
Organising and tidying your tools in ascending order in a suitable box is practical and a good way of avoiding any damage.
