As with other model making tools, Scientific MHD has a selection of saws to meet your needs. Smaller and more manageable than the larger saws used in DIY, model-making saws nevertheless are for specific uses and often come with interchangeable blades.
How to choose your hand-held saw ?
When you think of a hand-held saw, you usually think of a handsaw or a hacksaw. Model making is a little different, as you are working with smaller parts, which require a high level of precision. Fortunately, there are saws that are suitable to meet this need.
Our selection of saws have much thinner blades. Saws for model making are similar in shape to a hacksaw, but these do not only cut metal. In fact, in model making, you are likely to be cutting parts made of wood, plastic, and steel. The choice of your saw will depend on the material you wish to work with. As with a hacksaw, the blade is removable and so you can keep the same frame and make sure you have a stock of several blades to go in it.
How do you maintain your saw ?
These saws do not require much maintenance. However, don’t forget that the blades can wear. Saw blades, especially for hacksaws, can become blunt and when this happens, you’ll need to replace them.
The blades used in model-making saws cannot be sharpened and so you’ll need to find other ways of keeping them in good condition. You’ll find that some wood and metal cuttings tend to stay on the blades between the teeth. The finer the teeth, the more residue the blade will retain. It is therefore imperative to wipe the blade after each use to prevent it from getting clogged up and help maintain its sharpness.
You can also apply a solvent on a wood saw blade to prevent resin build-up. Methylated spirits, for example, work very well.
The maintenance of your saws will differ depending on what material you are cutting. Choosing the correct blade for the job is essential, as the wrong type used can damage it and cause it to become dull much quicker. Always check that the blade you are fitting to your saw is suitable for the material that you are using.
Saw blades can generally last a long time with proper use and maintenance. However, be mindful that these parts do indeed wear out and will eventually have to be replaced.
