Model Plastic model of tank Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.N - Tunisia 1:16
The Panzer III was the common name for a medium tank developed in the 1930s by Germany and widely used during World War II. Its official German designation was Panzerkampfwagen III Sd Kfz. 141 (abbreviated as PzKpfw III), which means "armored combat vehicle." It was intended to fight other armored combat vehicles and to serve alongside the Panzer IV, tasked with supporting infantry; however, facing the formidable T-34, the Germans needed more powerful anti-tank guns. With the Panzer IV having a wider turret, the roles were reversed. The Panzer IV was equipped with the long-barreled 7.5 cm KwK 40 gun and participated in tank-to-tank combat. The Panzer III became obsolete in this role and was, in most cases, replaced by the Panzer IV. Starting from 1942, the last version of the Panzer III was equipped with the 7.5 cm KwK 37 L/24, better suited for infantry support. Production of the Panzer III ceased in 1943. However, the high-performance chassis of the Panzer III served as the basis for the Sturmgeschütz III chassis until the end of the war.
