What is an RC Motor Glider?

A motor glider is like the best of both worlds. It's a glider equipped with a motor, often electric, that allows you to take off unassisted, climb to your desired altitude, then cut the power to enjoy the silence, gliding flight, thermals... A real pleasure.

What sets a motor glider apart from a traditional RC plane is primarily its ability to fly for a long time without consuming energy once in the air. Unlike a traditional plane that constantly relies on its engine, the motor glider uses it as a springboard. And compared to a pure glider, you don't need a winch, slope, or assistance to take off.

Why Choose a Radio-Controlled Motor Glider?

You may be hesitating between different types of planes? I understand. If you enjoy calm, contemplative flights but don't want to complicate things too much, the motor glider is an excellent compromise.

It is suitable for both beginners and more experienced modelers who want to explore thermal flying. You can fly in a field, from a hill, or even in a clear park. The motor provides real freedom, and the glider gives you the exhilarating sensation of surfing the air.

And let's face it: it's soothing. You take your time, observe the sky, learn to feel the wind. It's almost poetic.

How to Choose the Right RC Motor Glider?

Before buying, I recommend considering a few criteria. This will prevent disappointments.

First, the wingspan. A larger motor glider (starting from 2 meters) will be more stable, more visible in flight, and will take better advantage of thermals. But it will also be a bit bulkier to transport.

Next, the type of propulsion. Some models have a folding front propeller, others have rear thrust propulsion. And sometimes, on higher-end models, the motor is fully retractable for perfect aerodynamics once turned off.

In terms of materials, EPO foam models are ideal for beginners: sturdy, lightweight, easy to repair. Fiber or wood structure versions are more elegant but often reserved for experienced pilots.

Lastly, remember to check the required skill level. Some models are very accessible, while others require good control of the glider in all circumstances. Read the descriptions carefully, ask questions if needed, and choose according to your desire... and experience.

Motor Glider Kit or Ready-to-Fly (RTF, ARF, PNP)?

When I bought my first motor glider, I got a little lost in the acronyms. Here's what you need to know:

RTF (Ready to Fly): everything is included, even the remote control. Perfect for beginners.
PNP (Plug and Play): the motor glider is assembled and equipped, but you need to add your radio, battery, and charger.
ARF (Almost Ready to Fly): not everything is assembled, you need to assemble and sometimes install the motor or servos.

Personally, I find PNP very interesting to start seriously without limiting yourself to an entry-level model. But if you enjoy tinkering, ARF can be a real pleasure.

What Motorization for Your RC Motor Glider?

Here, I recommend opting for Protronik motors, which offer excellent efficiency and remarkable reliability. The choice of motor will depend on the wingspan and weight of your model.

For a motor glider between 1.5 and 2 meters, a Protronik DM2215 brushless motor may suffice, paired with a Protronik BF-20A controller. If you are flying a larger glider, from 2.5 to 3 meters, look for a DM2815 or DM3020 with a BF-45A or BF-75A controller, according to the intensity requirements.

The advantage of this brand is the flexibility, consistency, and perfect compatibility with modern batteries.

What Equipment for Flying a Motor Glider?

For the remote control, choose a minimum 4-channel model. Personally, I prefer a 6-channel radio, which gives you more freedom if you add functions like flaps or airbrakes.

When it comes to power supply, nothing beats LiPo BlackLithium batteries. They are lightweight, powerful, and have a good lifespan. For a classic motor glider, a 3S battery of 1300 to 2200 mAh generally works very well.

And to recharge all that, two very good choices: the SCIENTIFIC MHD chargers, simple and effective, or the Protronik models, often a bit more comprehensive if you want to monitor the cell voltage precisely.

I also recommend having a small LiPo voltmeter on hand. It's not much, but it saves you from many surprises in the field.

Flying Tips and Suitable Locations

The motor glider loves space. Prefer large fields, open flat terrains, or small hills to take advantage of updrafts. I advise against wooded areas, which are too turbulent, especially for beginners.

In terms of weather, light to moderate wind is ideal. Too much wind makes the glider difficult to control. No wind at all, and you'll struggle to stay in the air for long without the motor.

Also, remember to check local regulations: some areas are off-limits for flying or reserved for clubs. By joining a modeling club, you often benefit from advice, dedicated space, and a friendly atmosphere.

What is the difference between a glider and a motor glider?The motor glider has an engine that allows it to take off and gain altitude on its own. The pure glider, on the other hand, must be launched manually or with a winch.

How long can an RC motor glider fly?On average, 20 to 30 minutes with a well-chosen battery. But with some practice and by using updrafts, some manage to exceed an hour of flight!
