The A-4 Skyhawk was designed by Douglas in response to a US Navy tender to replace the old A-1 Skyraider with a jet attack aircraft. Douglas opted for a design aimed at minimizing the size, weight, and complexity of the aircraft. The result was an aircraft whose weight was only half of that specified by the Navy. Its wings were so compact that they did not need to be folded for storage on aircraft carriers.
