The M48 Patton is a main battle tank (MBT) that was designed in the United States. It is the third tank to officially bear the name of General George S. Patton, commander of the Third United States Army during World War II and one of the early American advocates for the use of tanks in combat. It was an improvement over the M47 Patton tank. The M48 Patton remained in service in the United States until it was replaced by the M60 and served as the primary battle tank for the U.S. Army and Marine Corps in South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. It was widely used by U.S. allies during the Cold War, including NATO countries.
