The Panzer III was the common name for a medium tank developed in the 1930s by Germany and widely used during World War II. Its official German designation was Panzerkampfwagen III Sd Kfz. 141 (abbreviated PzKpfw III), which means "armored combat vehicle". It was intended to fight other armored combat vehicles and to serve alongside the support Panzer IV; however, when the Germans faced the formidable T-34, more powerful anti-tank guns were needed.
The Panzer IV, with a larger turret, roles were reversed. The Panzer IV was equipped with a long-barreled 7.5 cm KwK 40 gun and participated in tank battles. The Panzer III became obsolete in this role and was replaced in most cases by the Panzer IV. From 1942, the last version of the Panzer III was equipped with the 7.5 cm KwK 37 L/24, better suited for infantry support. Production of the Panzer III ended in 1943. However, the high-performing chassis of the Panzer III continued to be used for Sturmgeschütz III assault guns until the end of the war.
