Plastic model of the Lockeed P2V-7 Neptune aircraft, scale 1:104

Lockeed P2V-7 Neptune aircraft, scale 1:104

Used by the US Navy, the P2V-7 performed a variety of functions, easily adapting to maritime patrol, mine laying, or torpedo bomber missions. It was also widely used to track hurricanes.

During the International Geophysical Year (IGY, 1957-1958), and in particular as part of Operation Deep Freeze, several Neptunes were equipped with skis and used by the Navy in Antarctica.

The IGY was a collaboration between 40 nations to conduct scientific studies of the Earth, from the North Pole to the South Pole.

The United States, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, Norway, Chile, Argentina, and the USSR agreed to travel to the South Pole, the least explored region on Earth. Their goal was to advance global knowledge of Antarctic hydrography

and weather systems, glacial movements, and marine life.
