The USS Midway, whose construction began in 1943 and entered service a month after its launch in 1945 and Japan's surrender, was the first American warship to bear the name Midway, the CV-41, in commemoration of the famous naval battle that turned the tide of the Pacific War.
The Midway took part in several military operations, including the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Iran hostage crisis, and the Gulf War. It was decommissioned in 1992 and finally taken out of service in 1997. In 2003, it was transformed into a museum ship in San Diego.
