The USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) is an aircraft carrier of the US Navy. She is the first unit of the Gerald R. Ford class, which will gradually replace the Nimitz-class units. She is one of the US Navy's 11 giant aircraft carriers. Unveiled on January 16, 2007 in a press release from Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter, the ship is named after the 38th President of the United States, Gerald R. Ford, who fought in World War II aboard the aircraft carrier USS Monterey in the Pacific theater, ending his career with the rank of lieutenant commander.
