The Robart 615 pneumatic retract is a set of two rotating main gear designed for radio-controlled airplanes ranging from .60 to .90 size. It is particularly suitable for RC warbirds and semi-scale models requiring realistic wheel retraction into the wings. Its unique feature is its 100° rotating mechanism, allowing the legs to pivot during retraction to replicate the main gear kinematics of many fighter aircraft. This design is especially suitable for models like the P-40 Warhawk and the F4U Corsair, as well as other similarly designed RC aircraft.
The Robart 615 is designed for models weighing approximately 5 to 12 lbs, or 2.3 to 5.4 kg. Its construction combines a relatively lightweight design with sturdy metal components suitable for the stresses of taxiing and landings. The gear legs are made of 3/16" hardened steel, approximately 4.76 mm in diameter. They have a length of about 6.25 inches (159 mm). The weight of the two mechanisms is around 6 oz, or 170 g. The rotating geometry is a significant advantage for aircraft where the legs need to pivot in the wing rather than simply fold back on a fixed axis.
The Robart 615 operates with a pneumatic system. The retraction and extension of the two gears are controlled by a pneumatic valve connected to the model's radio system. The mechanism is made of steel and designed to provide reliable operation under normal RC aircraft usage conditions. The pneumatic system also allows for speed adjustment through flow restrictors, enabling smoother retraction and extension. For a complete installation, a Robart pneumatic control kit, an air tank, tubing and fittings, and a filling system are required. The Robart 188 kit is specifically documented with this reference for .60 size models.
The Robart 615 is a particularly attractive solution for hobbyists building or restoring an RC warbird with a rotating retract. The reference is commonly associated with the P-40 Warhawk and the F4U Corsair in the .60 size range. The 100° movement helps maintain a kinematics close to what is desired on these radio-controlled models. Robostruts can also be used for certain installations to improve shock absorption during landings and enhance the scale appearance of the gear.
