Carthaginian Veterans 1/72. Period of the Punic Wars, 32 1/72 scale figures included to paint. The Punic Wars were a series of three conflicts that pitted the ancient Rome against the Carthaginian civilization or Punic civilization. The main cause of the Punic Wars was a conflict of interests between the Carthaginian Republic and the expanding Roman Republic. Initially, the Romans coveted Sicily, which was partly controlled by the Carthaginians. At the beginning of the First Punic War, Carthage, which was a vast maritime empire, was the dominant power in the Mediterranean Sea, while Rome was the rising power in Italy. By the end of the Third Punic War, after more than a hundred years of conflict and the deaths of hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians on both sides, Rome managed to conquer Carthaginian territory and destroy Carthage, becoming the most powerful state in the western Mediterranean. With the end of the Macedonian Wars - which were taking place at the same time as the Punic Wars - and the defeat of the Seleucid monarchy in the eastern Mediterranean, Rome emerged as the dominant power in the Mediterranean and the most powerful city in the classical world.
