Design and Contents of the Kit

The FRAM model kit from Turk Model is a high-quality wooden construction kit, including:

  • laser-cut wooden parts for precision

  • numerous metal, plastic, and 3D printed resin details for added intricacy

  • sail cloths included

  • detailed cabin interior with LED lighting

  • step-by-step construction plans and detailed instructions in 13 color A3 format pages

  • full-size assembly plan and comprehensive manual

The kit is primarily designed as a static model, but it can also be converted into a radio-controlled model by adding a propulsion and radio system (elements not included).

The kit offered by Turk Model faithfully reproduces this legendary exploration ship in the form of a large wooden model to build at 1/50 scale. Once completed, the model reaches approximately 95 cm in length, with a hull length of about 78 cm, a width of 23 cm, and a height of around 74 cm, providing an impressive presence for display.

The construction relies on laser-cut wooden parts for precision and ease of assembly. The kit also includes numerous detailed elements in metal, plastic, and resin, as well as fabric sails to faithfully replicate the look of the original ship. Certain areas' interiors are detailed and can be illuminated with LED lighting, enhancing the model's realism once completed.

Detailed construction plans and illustrated step-by-step instructions accompany the kit to guide the modeler throughout the assembly. While this model is primarily intended for static display, it can also be adapted into a radio-controlled version by installing an electric motor, a steering servo, an electronic speed controller, and a radio system.

With its large size, high level of detail, and historical significance, the 1/50 scale FRAM Turk Model model is an especially exciting project for enthusiasts of naval modeling and polar exploration history.

A Brief History of the Fram:

1 Construction and Design: The Fram was built in 1892 in Norway, in Bergen, at the request of the famous Norwegian polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen. The ship was specially designed to withstand the icy conditions of the polar regions. It had a reinforced hull made of wood and steel, and its unique shape allowed it to resist ice pressure by rising on top of it rather than being crushed.

2 Nansen's Expeditions: The Fram was first used during Fridtjof Nansen's expedition to the North Pole in 1893-1896. Nansen and his crew attempted to reach the pole by letting the Fram get trapped in the ice and drift with it. Although the expedition did not reach the pole, it provided important scientific data about the Arctic.

3 Amundsen's Expeditions: After Nansen's expedition, the Fram was used by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen for his conquest of the South Pole in 1911. This expedition was successful, and Amundsen and his team became the first to reach the South Pole. The Fram was also used by Amundsen for his Arctic explorations.

4 Other missions: After Amundsen's expeditions, the Fram continued to be used for research missions in the polar regions, notably by other Norwegian explorers. The ship was retired from active service in the 1930s, but it was preserved and is currently on display at the Fram Museum in Oslo, Norway.

The Fram has become a symbol of the heroic age of polar exploration, and its legacy lives on in the history of polar exploration and scientific research in the polar regions.

The Fram is now preserved and exhibited at the Fram Museum in Bygdøynes, Oslo.
