The Greek hoplite is a heavily armed foot soldier, as opposed to the lightly armed gymnast and peltast. Hoplite equipment remains essentially the same from the mid-7th century BC to the Hellenistic period. It includes: a helmet, a cuirass, greaves (leg armor), a shield (sometimes called a hóplon by historians), a spear, a short sword. The total weight of the equipment is not known for certain, but it is quite significant, around thirty kilograms. Hoplites fought in a phalanx, a formation that spread throughout Greece probably from 700 to 650 BC. This is referred to as the "hoplite revolution."
