Curtiss P-36C, 27th Fighter Squadron, 1st Pursuit Group,

National Air Races, Cleveland, Ohio, September 1939

Aircraft painted in one of the most characteristic experimental camouflage schemes used by the 27th PS. This high-contrast temporary paint was intended for display purposes and was part of trials conducted before the introduction of standard wartime camouflage schemes.

Curtiss P-36C, 27th Fighter Squadron, USAAC,

Selfridge Field, Michigan, 1939

Aircraft photographed before the application of demonstration camouflage, painted in the classic and uniform scheme used by frontline units. An example of the initial appearance of the P-36C before the intensive camouflage testing phase.

Curtiss P-36C, 23rd Composite Group,

Eglin Field, Florida, 1941-1942

Plane used for intensive training and test flights. The unit participated in interception training exercises involving James H. Doolittle's B-25B bombers, before the raid on Tokyo in April 1942. The temporary camouflage and visible wear are the result of frequent flights and repeated repainting.
