The Nina was a classic caravel with a pure Latin rig, with sails suspended in the middle of a Latin yard and shrouds fixed to the side of the ship. It did not have a forecastle but only a quarterdeck. Christopher Columbus, the captain of the Santa Maria in the first historic expedition, later made two more crossings of the Atlantic aboard the Nina, which had a particularly sturdy structure, being slightly smaller at just under 20 m.
