Sir Francis Drake's galleon
The Golden Hind took its name from the golden hind depicted on the coat of arms of the family of Lord C.C. Hatton, who financed Sir Francis Drake's circumnavigation of the globe. On December 13, 1577, aboard the galleon Golden Hind, Drake set sail with four other ships for the most famous voyage in English naval history. After a difficult passage through the Strait of Magellan due to terrible storms that caused two ships to be wrecked, he arrived in the port of Valparaiso. He then sailed along the coasts of Chile and Peru, plundering Spanish ports and ships and capturing a huge bounty. He sailed as far as California, likely in an attempt to find the long sought-after Northwest Passage. Continuing his journey towards the Moluccas and Java, he rounded the Cape of Good Hope to return to England after three years, completing his circumnavigation.
