The USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) is an aircraft carrier of the United States Navy. It is the first unit of the Gerald R. Ford class which is intended to gradually replace the units of the Nimitz class. It is one of the 11 giant aircraft carriers of the US Navy. Unveiled on January 16, 2007, in a statement by Secretary of the Navy, Donald C. Winter, this vessel is named after the 38th President of the United States, Gerald R. Ford, who fought during World War II aboard the aircraft carrier USS Monterey in the Pacific theater, finishing his career with the rank of lieutenant commander.
