Specialist since 1955 The Grumman F6F Hellcat was a carrier-based combat aircraft developed to replace the earlier F4F Wildcats in service with the United States Navy. It was an entirely new design powered by the 2,000 hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine. The Hellcat was the first Navy fighter to incorporate lessons learned from combat with the Japanese Zero. The Hellcat proved to be the most successful aircraft in naval history, with 5,271 planes in service with the US Navy and the US Marine Corps.
