Stephenson's Rocket: a decisive milestone in the history of the railway

In 1829, the company operating the future Liverpool-Manchester railway line organized the Rainhill trials to select a locomotive capable of providing service.

Designed by Robert Stephenson, the Rocket won the competition against several competing machines.

It reached a speed of about 48 to 49 km/h, a remarkable performance for the time.

Its multitubular boiler improved heat transfer and helped produce the steam necessary for traction.

Combined with its inclined cylinders and driving wheels, this design contributed to the development of steam locomotives for passenger and freight transport.

The Rocket thus became a symbol of the early days of modern railways.

The original locomotive has been preserved and is now exhibited in a museum.

With this OcCre model, you can recreate at your scale a machine that contributed to the evolution of railway transport in the 19th century.

Assembling the Rocket model: a project suitable for beginners

With 650 parts and an estimated construction time of 100 hours, the Rocket allows you to discover the main stages of building a miniature locomotive without starting with an intermediate or expert model.

Take the time to identify the elements before each step and check their fit before gluing.

This method helps to limit errors and achieve a smooth assembly.

The laser-cut wooden boards facilitate the preparation of parts.

The downloadable instructions guide you through the assembly order.

Provide a stable, well-lit workspace and clear enough to sort the small parts as you go.

Consider additional accessories!

The tools, accessories, and products needed for assembling and finishing the model are not included.

We have selected for you the main items useful for its construction.

Wood, brass, and paint: achieving the finishes of the locomotive

The Rocket model combines several materials to reproduce the shapes and details of the locomotive.

The various wood species are used to create the structure, cladding, and visible finishes.

The photo-etched brass parts provide fine details, while the cast zamak elements complete the parts that require precise shapes.

To prepare the surfaces, use fine sandpaper when necessary and remove residues before gluing.

If you wish to paint your miniature locomotive, work in small areas and check the color on a piece of scrap wood or a test piece.

A light application helps preserve the reliefs and details.

You can also opt for a finish that reveals the wood nuances, depending on the desired look.

Paint and finishing products are to be planned separately.

Displaying the Rocket locomotive in a railway setting

With its 290 mm length, the Rocket model easily fits in a display case, on a shelf, or in a collection dedicated to historic trains.

Its format highlights the boiler, wheels, and mechanical elements characteristic of this pioneering locomotive.

To enhance the presentation, you can create a diorama inspired by a 19th-century station or a railway environment evoking the early days of the Liverpool-Manchester line.

A section of track, a platform, or some decorative elements can contextualize the model.

However, check the dimensions and compatibility of the accessories considered: the presence of a functional network or decorative elements should not be assumed from the product sheet alone.

Who is the Rocket OcCre train model for?

The 1/24 scale Rocket model is aimed at adults and enthusiasts who want to explore railway modeling with a historic steam locomotive.

Its beginner level, 650 pieces, and estimated 100 hours of assembly time allow you to become familiar with assembling wooden pieces and adding details.

Instructions accompany this first experience.

Once completed, the Rocket becomes a display piece for a collection of model trains or a diorama dedicated to the origins of modern railways.
