M/S FINNMARKEN 1/60
Commissioned in 1956, the M/S Finnmarken marked a turning point in the history of the Hurtigruten fleet. It was the first vessel of the “new generation” to feature a rear superstructure known as a stern loader, becoming the prototype for a series of ferries operated until the early 1960s. Decommissioned in 1993, the original Finnmarken is now part of the Hurtigruten Museum in Stokmarknes. This strong historical background gives the model a true heritage dimension, highly appreciated by modelers seeking authenticity.
For the development of this kit, the manufacturer was able to rely on the original shipyard drawings from Blohm & Voss in Hamburg, where the real ship was built and delivered.
This documentary base ensures a faithful reproduction at 1/60 scale, both in overall proportions and in the finer details of the hull and superstructures. Once assembled, the model reaches impressive dimensions, measuring over 1.35 meters in length, making it a centerpiece in any ship model collection.
The kit is based on a classic plank-on-frame construction, a hallmark of traditional wooden ship modeling. All structural parts are supplied as laser-cut wooden components, ensuring excellent precision and optimal fit. This approach allows the hull to be built progressively while respecting the elegant lines of the original ferry. The finely designed superstructures can be opened to reveal the interior lounge fittings, adding an extra level of realism.
The supplied fittings are particularly comprehensive. They include numerous resin parts produced by 3D printing, as well as wooden or plastic components cut by laser.
The ship’s four decks are highly detailed, both in terms of structure and visible fittings. A decal sheet is also included, featuring the lettering of the sister ships M/S Finnmarken, M/S Ragnvald Jarl and M/S Sjøkurs, along with the NRK “Summer Boat” logos, allowing for accurate customization.
This wooden ship model for adults is supplied with a complete lighting kit, including more than 100 LEDs for interior lighting and navigation lights. This feature enhances the model once completed, whether displayed statically or used on the water in its radio-controlled configuration.
The assembly instructions are illustrated step by step with 3D images, guiding the modeler throughout the build. Additional explanatory text and an English parts list complete the documentation, making the project accessible while leaving room for craftsmanship.
One of the major strengths of this kit lies in its dual purpose. The MS Finnmarken can be built as a static display model, ideal for showcase presentation, or converted into a radio-controlled model for sailing.
The kit is designed from the outset to accommodate propulsion and radio control. The equipment required for navigation is not included, allowing modelers to select the components best suited to their preferences.
A minimum two-channel radio, a standard servo, an electronic speed controller, a brushed 550 or 600 motor, a shaft line, a 50–55 mm propeller and a suitable power supply are required.
With its careful design, high-quality materials and extensive customization potential, the MS Finnmarken 1/60 stands out as a long-term project for those seeking a demanding wooden model kit to build.
It combines historical accuracy, technical depth and construction pleasure, making it a reference model for large-scale wooden ship kits.
