The tug was approved by the US Navy on 22 May 1941 and named "YT146 HOGA", after which it was stationed at the 14th Naval District Pearl Harbor.
After less than six months in service, HOGA was put to a greater test than ever anticipated, the attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. HOGA struggled for 48 hours putting out fires, towing bombed warships, and rescuing sailors from drowning. Today, HOGA is the only surviving vessel after the Japanese attack.
