The features of the Trumpeter Tirpitz 1/200 model

The Trumpeter 03703 is a plastic model kit that reproduces the Tirpitz with a level of detail particularly suited to its large scale.

The significant surface of the model allows for working on the superstructures, artillery, deck equipment, and the numerous small elements that characterize the battleship.

Trumpeter announces over 1,800 pieces, spread over 40 sprues, in addition to the hull, decks, and superstructure. The release is scheduled for 2026.

What does the box of the Tirpitz 03703 contain?

The kit combines plastic parts, metal elements, and photo-etch to reproduce the numerous details of the ship.

Trumpeter notably includes a monobloc hull made from multi-directional slide molds.

The deck is also molded in one piece. This design provides a clean foundation for continuing the assembly of the superstructures and ship equipment.

The box includes:

  • the Tirpitz hull;
  • the monobloc deck;
  • the superstructures;
  • various armament elements;
  • 40 sprues;
  • four photo-etch sheets;
  • metal parts;
  • propeller shafts;
  • anchor chain;
  • four Arado Ar 196 seaplanes;
  • an exhibition base.

The four sprues dedicated to the Arado Ar 196 allow for reproducing the embarked seaplanes with a level of detail suitable for the 1/200 scale.

What details are reproduced by Trumpeter?

The large 1/200 scale allows Trumpeter to reproduce many elements of the Tirpitz with a finesse that is hard to achieve on a smaller model.

The armament benefits from detailed molding. The four photo-etch sheets provide particularly fine elements, including railings, ladders, and certain parts of the radar equipment.

The metal parts complete the kit. Trumpeter notably provides the propeller shafts and anchor chain in metal.

At this scale, these details become significant. The railings and small structures are much more visible on the finished model.

Why choose a 1/200 scale model of the Tirpitz?

The 1/200 scale allows for a large display model while retaining a significant amount of detail.

The Tirpitz is particularly interesting for this type of reproduction.

Its numerous superstructures, turrets, deck equipment, and embarked aviation offer many areas to detail and highlight.

However, the model requires a substantial work and display space. It is advisable to plan its placement before starting assembly.

The base provided with the kit allows for presenting the model once assembly is completed.

What level of experience is required to assemble the Tirpitz 03703?

The Trumpeter Tirpitz 03703 is more suitable for a modeler with experience in assembling ship models.

The number of pieces, the size of the model, and the presence of photo-etch require patience and good organization.

The finer elements must be handled with care.

I recommend working on sub-assemblies.

This way, you can gradually progress on the hull, superstructures, artillery, deck equipment, and photo-etch elements.

Fine tweezers, a precision clamp, and glue suitable for each material will be particularly useful.

What is needed to build this model?

The box contains the construction kit, but you need to prepare the tools and products necessary for assembly and finishing.

I recommend in particular:

  • a modeling cutting pliers;
  • a precision knife or scalpel;
  • fine files;
    • tweezers;
    • plastic glue;
    • cyanoacrylate glue for certain metal parts;
    • fine sandpaper;
    • paints needed for decoration;
    • a sufficiently large workspace.

Photo-etching requires a different method than plastic parts. It is necessary to avoid deforming it during separation and to make precise folds.

Why are the Arado Ar 196 important in the model?

The four Arado Ar 196 included in the kit allow completing the representation of the Tirpitz with its embarked aviation.

Trumpeter provides four sprues dedicated to the Arado Ar 196, with detailed parts.

These seaplanes are an interesting element for display, as they add an extra dimension to the battleship's deck and allow varying the visible details on the finished model.

What is the difference between the Tirpitz and the Bismarck?

The Tirpitz and the Bismarck belong to the same battleship class, but the Tirpitz underwent modifications and equipment evolutions throughout its career.

The Tirpitz was the second and last battleship of the Bismarck class.

Trumpeter also offers the Bismarck in 1/200 scale under reference 03702, allowing collectors to compare the two vessels.

For a collection dedicated to large German warships, both references can be considered separately.

What history lies behind the Tirpitz?

The Tirpitz is the second battleship of the Bismarck class and the last ship of this class built by Germany.

It was delivered to the Kriegsmarine on February 25, 1941, then underwent trials and adjustments before joining Norway in early 1942. Its presence in the Norwegian fjords then represented a significant threat to the Allied convoys heading to the Soviet Union.

The battleship carried out several operational sorties, but its strategic role also relied on its mere presence. The Allies had to maintain significant naval forces to monitor and counter a potential sortie of the vessel.

In September 1943, the Tirpitz was attacked in the Kåfjord by British midget submarines. It suffered significant damage and was temporarily out of action. In April 1944, the British air-naval attack of Operation Tungsten inflicted further damage. Other attacks followed during the summer.

On September 15, 1944, Operation Paravane marked a new stage. Avro Lancaster bombers of the RAF notably used Tallboy bombs. One bomb hit the Tirpitz, severely damaging its bow, rendering the battleship unfit for combat operations.

The vessel was then moved near Tromsø, off the island of Håkøya. A final British attack was carried out on November 12, 1944, during Operation Catechism.

The Lancaster bombers of the 9th and 617th Squadrons used 12,000-pound Tallboy bombs. Several impacts and nearby explosions caused catastrophic damage. The Tirpitz capsized and sank.

This spectacular end partly explains the historical interest of the ship. For the modeler, it also provides a particular context to this Trumpeter reproduction: behind the numerous parts of reference 03703 lies one of the most famous battleships of World War II.
