The Rogers 119 and the Golden Spike: a locomotive that made history in 1869

Built in 1868 by Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works in Paterson, New Jersey, the Rogers 119 belongs to the family of American 4-4-0 type locomotives.

Originally intended for regular railway service, it became famous for its role in the ceremony marking the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in the United States.

On May 10, 1869, an issue on Devil's Gate bridge prevented the special train of Thomas C. from continuing its journey. The Rogers 119, stationed in Ogden, was called upon to transport the convoy to Promontory, Utah.

There, it met the Jupiter locomotive from the Central Pacific during the Golden Spike ceremony, symbolizing the joining of the eastern and western railway networks.

The Rogers 119 later continued its career as a freight locomotive under a different number before being scrapped in 1903.

The OcCre model allows you to represent this witness of American railway history and to add it to a collection alongside the Jupiter locomotive also offered by the brand.

Assembling the Rogers 119 model: an intermediate modeling project

Precise assembly over multiple stages

With 966 pieces and an estimated 250 hours of work, this steam locomotive model requires patience, organization, and precision.

The assembly involves various materials and detailed elements that require careful positioning before fixing.

Laser-cut wooden boards facilitate the adjustment of structural and cladding pieces.

Before starting, prepare a stable, well-lit workspace with enough space to sort the elements.

Have the appropriate cutting and finishing tools, a glue compatible with the materials, and small accessories to hold the pieces during drying.

Refer to the downloadable instructions and proceed in the specified order, avoiding forcing elements that require adjustment.

Consider complementary accessories!

The tools, accessories, and products needed for assembling and finishing the model are not included.

Wood, brass, and paint: preparing the locomotive finishes

The Rogers 119 combines several materials to recreate the structure and details of this historic locomotive.

Various wood species are used for construction and visible finishes.

The photo-etched brass parts provide fine details, while the zamak cast elements complete shapes and small accessories.

To achieve a clean result, check the fittings before gluing and gently sand the surfaces that require it.

If you plan to paint your miniature locomotive, prepare the paints and finishing products separately.

Apply them in controlled layers and perform a preliminary test on a wood scrap to check the finish.

You can also choose to leave some surfaces in visible wood, depending on the desired look.

Displaying the Rogers 119 in a collection or railway diorama

With a length of 502 mm, a width of 87 mm, and a height of 145 mm, the Rogers 119 model requires a display space suitable for its size.

It can be showcased on a base or in a display case, where its details will be visible without frequent handling.

To set the scene for this locomotive, a diorama could depict the Golden Spike ceremony at Promontory in 1869, with a section of track, terrain decor, and elements inspired by a railway construction site of the time.

Having the Jupiter locomotive present would recall the historic meeting of the two trains. The rails, decor, and other staging elements are to be planned separately as they are not included in the kit.

Who is the OcCre Rogers 119 train model intended for?

This historical train model is suitable for enthusiasts of American locomotives, steam train lovers, and modelers interested in the development of the transcontinental railroad.

Its intermediate level and 966 pieces make it a project intended for individuals who have already acquired some assembly skills.

With an estimated assembly time of about 250 hours, it allows for dedicating time to a detailed railway reproduction, designed to be displayed in a modeling collection.
