Antiquity - 3500 – 20 BC

When we speak of Antiquity, we dive back into a fascinating era, a vast fresco that begins around 3500 BC with the first Mesopotamian cities and stretches all the way to the threshold of Ancient Rome.

You want to understand this period before choosing your figures, so here I give you the essential landmarks, simply, through the eyes of the enthusiast that I am.

A founding period

When we speak of Antiquity, we dive back into a fascinating era, a vast fresco that begins around 3500 BC with the first Mesopotamian cities and stretches all the way to the threshold of Ancient Rome.

You want to understand this period before choosing your figures, so here I give you the essential landmarks, simply, through the eyes of the enthusiast that I am.

A founding period
Everything begins in Mesopotamia, where writing appears, along with the first organised armies and great cities such as Ur, Lagash and Akkad. The Sumerians invent the composite bow, the earliest chariots, and develop a structured society that still shapes our imagination. Around 3100 BC, Ancient Egypt unifies. The pharaohs rule over a vast territory protected by the desert, and their armies use swift chariots, skilled archers, and a discipline that borders on the sacred. When I observe these civilisations, I feel that each painted figure tells a fragment of this almost mythical world.

The great kingdoms of the Near East
Later, the Assyrians become formidable conquerors, imposing a methodical, brutal, almost industrial form of warfare. Their heavy chariots, archers and allied troops reflect an advanced, sometimes terrifying military organisation. Around them rise other powers such as the Hittites, the Persians, and the kingdoms of Canaan, all engaged in territorial, religious or economic conflicts.

Greece, then Rome, transform the Mediterranean
From the 8th century BC onward, the Greeks shape a new way of fighting, based on the hoplite phalanx, where each soldier protects his neighbour. Then comes the era of the Spartans, the Athenians, the Persian Wars, and finally the rise of Macedonia under Alexander. The Roman Republic, in turn, perfects the art of combat, confronts Etruscans, Gauls, Greeks and Carthaginians, and imposes an unyielding discipline. Behind each Roman figure, I always see a nearly emblematic rigour.

Some dates to situate your figures
3500 BC: Sumerian cities, earliest chariots.
3100 BC: unification of Egypt.
2000–1200 BC: rise of Mesopotamian kingdoms.
1200 BC: Iron Age.
800–500 BC: Greek city-states.
264–146 BC: Punic Wars.
27 BC: birth of the Roman Empire.

8078 – Sea Peoples
These figurines depict the Sea Peoples, a mysterious group appearing around 1200 BC. They attack Egypt, Canaanite cities, and disrupt the balance of the Near East. Pharaoh Ramses III faces them in memorable naval battles. For me, this set perfectly reflects this almost chaotic period of collapse.

8079 – Nubians
The Nubians, Egypt’s southern neighbours, oscillate between alliances, confrontations and even dominance over the pharaohs. Their archers are renowned, precise, formidable. A Nubian figure tells a complex, almost symbiotic story with Egypt.

8090 – Spartan Army
The Spartans embody absolute martial discipline. Their role in the Persian Wars, notably at Thermopylae, has become legendary. A Spartan figurine army is a concentrate of rigour, endurance and heroism.

8092 – Assyrian Infantry
Here are the core troops of the Assyrian forces: an organised, rigid, efficient infantry. Between the 9th and 7th centuries BC, Assyria builds a vast empire. These figures are ideal to represent an implacable military power.

8121 – Assyrian Allied/Auxiliary Infantry
These figures evoke the allied or subdued peoples integrated into the Assyrian army. Their diversity brings a rich, almost ethnographic visual dimension.

8124 – Assyrian Chariots
Assyrian chariots symbolise the warrior nobility of the Near East. Heavy and impressive, they dominate the wide plains. A perfect choice for an imposing army.

8125 – Assyrian Cavalry
Among the first to structure a true cavalry, the Assyrians mark a decisive turning point in military history. This set reflects that strategic evolution.

8128 – Assyrian Army Sampler
A varied and practical set showing the full diversity of the Assyrian army. For beginners, it is almost a complete initiation.

8129 – Theban Army
The Thebans, with their Sacred Band, briefly dominate Greece in the 4th century BC. This set explores a lesser-known but fascinating army.

8130 – Sumerian Chariot
Sumerian chariots are among the very first combat vehicles. Massive, ancient, almost archaic, they represent the genesis of organised warfare.

8132 – Sumerian Infantry
Here you have the soldiers of the earliest city-states. This is literally the origin of all armies to come, an invaluable historical foundation.

8134 – Etruscan Army
The Etruscans, powerful before Rome, deeply influence Roman military culture. This set illustrates a pivotal, often underestimated civilisation.

8184 – Greek Catapults
The Greeks refine siege warfare through ingenious machines. These catapults symbolise Hellenic mechanical ingenuity.

8216 – Greek Hoplites
Hoplites, with their heavy shields and spears, embody Greek combat. The hoplite phalanx is one of Antiquity’s major tactical pillars.

8321 – Pyrrhic Elephants
These elephants belong to the armies of Pyrrhus of Epirus, a fierce opponent of Rome. At his side, these animals become a feared psychological weapon. This set is perfect for depicting the early clashes between Rome and the Hellenistic armies.
