Roman Period, 32 1/72 scale figurines included for painting. The birth of the Sassanid Army (in Persian: Artesh-e S?s?n?y?n) dates back to the accession to the throne of Ardachir I when he defined a clear military objective aimed at restoring the Persian Empire by forming a permanent army under his personal command and whose officers were separated from the satraps, local princes, and nobles. He restored the Achaemenid military organizations, retained the Parthian cavalry, and employed new types of armor and siege weapons. This was the beginning of an army that served him and his successors for over 400 years, making the Sassanids, along with the Roman Empire and later the Byzantine Empire, one of the superpowers of late antiquity, defending Eranshahr (Iran) to the east against nomads from Central Asia such as the Hephthalites and the Turks, and to the west against the Roman Empire, and later the Byzantine Empire.
