American Corvette with 20 guns from 1781
The corvette Rattlesnake was built in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1779 or 1780, according to the designs of John Peck. It was armed, at various times, with 14 to 20 guns and its crew consisted of 85 members. It was captured off the American coast in 1781 by the English 44-gun ship Assurance. Taken to England, it was given the name Cormorant and its lines were redesigned. With reduced dimensions in the deadworks and very fine bow lines, the corvette Rattlesnake was expected to be extremely fast. It had a detached forecastle and quarterdeck, but connected by gangways that were removed during combat.
