The Sukhoi Su-34, known by its export designation Su-32 (NATO code: Fullback), is a Russian tactical bomber with anti-ship capabilities. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Soviet tactical bomber force relied mainly on the MiG-27 and Su-24M. Faced with the threat of new intelligent, high-precision weapons, the USSR decided to develop the Su-34 to adapt to these developments. Its Western equivalent is the Tornado IDS.

The Russian Air Force deployed Su-34s in Syria in support of the Syrian army during the Syrian civil war. As early as October 2, 2015, shortly after the start of the Russian military intervention in Syria, Su-34s carried out bombing missions from the Syrian base of Hmeimim. In August 2016, Su-34s and Tu-22M3s took off from Iran's Hamedan base to strike Islamic State and Fatah Al-Sham Front targets in the provinces of Aleppo, Deir ez-Zor and Idlib, destroying several ammunition depots, command posts and training camps.
