Specialist since 1955 Le San Raphael était une caravelle armée typique avec 2 mâts à voiles carrées et un mât à voile latine. Il avait une coque légère à faible tirant d'eau faite pour supporter avec certitude les très hautes mers à l'opposé des caravelles de cette époque très lourdes et peu man'uvrables. En 1434, le San Raphael appareilla avec l'expédition du navigateur Portugais, Alfonso Goncalvez le long des côtes Africaines.
