Under the command of Dick Brown, America, departing from New York, sailed to England in June 1851 to participate in the regatta scheduled for August 22 around the Isle of Wight, without any allowance for differences in tonnage or rigging. The prize offered was a 100-guinea cup. America won a crushing victory over the English squadron.
