The first Lemster boat was built in 1876 at the Genr shipyard. De Boer in Lemmer. In Friesland. The Lemster was originally a fishing boat used in the region north of the Zuiderzee, where navigation conditions are difficult due to tides and contrary winds. Therefore, the boat was designed to be a good sailor with a good sail area.
