The Soleil Royal, majestic French warship, remains one of the most iconic ships in French maritime history.

Constructed under the direction of the famous naval architect L. Hubac, this ship of the line was launched in 1669, at the peak of the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King.

With its impressive dimensions, the Soleil Royal was a marvel of naval engineering of its time. Its impressive solid oak hull, covered with copper plates, proudly rose on the waves, carrying 104 cannons spread over three decks. With a length of nearly 61 meters and a width of 16 meters, this majestic ship could accommodate a crew of over 900 men in times of war.

It is also the only three-deck ship pierced with fourteen gun ports before 1689.

As a first-rate ship, it was equipped with three lanterns at the top of the stern and another lantern on the mizzen mast.

During Louis XIV's reign, the French navy laid down approximately 150 ships of the line, including 56 large three-deck ships.

The Soleil Royal was one of the largest units of the fleet: the ship was to embody all the glory of the Sun King.

The Soleil Royal was the flagship of the French fleet for several decades, participating in numerous major confrontations. It was the flagship of the French squadron during the famous Battle of Béveziers in 1673, where it demonstrated devastating firepower, ensuring the French victory.

However, despite its glorious exploits, the fate of the Soleil Royal was marked by tragedy. During the Battle of La Hougue in 1692, the ship was targeted by an Anglo-Dutch coalition. Despite a valiant resistance from its crew, the Soleil Royal was severely damaged and set on fire. In a final heroic attempt, the ship's commander, Admiral Anne Hilarion de Tourville, ordered its abandonment and ran it aground on the French coast to prevent it from falling into enemy hands.

Today, the memory of the Soleil Royal endures in the French collective imagination. Its power and grandeur forever symbolize the golden age of the French navy and the era of Louis XIV.

Replicas of the ship have been built to commemorate its legacy and are displayed in various maritime museums, reminding future generations of the crucial role it played in the history of France and navigation.
