Commissioned in 1963, the Zwarte Zee was built by the Smit's Scheepswerven shipyards in Kinderdijk (Netherlands) for the renowned towing company Smit Internationale. With a gross tonnage of 1539 tons, this sea giant measured 77.5 meters in length, 12.35 meters in width, and had a draught of 6.90 meters.

It was equipped with two fiberglass lifeboats capable of accommodating up to 40 men, symbolizing its power and strategic role in high seas towing and rescue operations.
