The San Raphael was a typical armed caravel with 2 masts with square sails and a mast with a lateen sail. It had a light hull with shallow draft made to surely withstand the very high seas unlike the very heavy and unmaneuverable caravels of that time. In 1434, the San Raphael set sail with the expedition of the Portuguese navigator, Alfonso Goncalvez along the African coasts.
