Steam and sail sloop of war 1862 The CSS Alabama was a propeller warship built in 1862 in Liverpool by John Laird and Co, for the Confederacy. It was probably the most famous ship of the American Civil War. Under the command of Captain Raphael Semmes, it undertook many war actions in the North Atlantic and also in the waters of the West Indies where it captured numerous enemy ships, causing heavy losses to the Union merchant marine. Returning from South Africa, it sought shelter in the English Channel at Cherbourg to undergo repairs in a shipyard, but it was attacked at sea by the Kearsarge, an opposing ship that had been following it for a long time, and despite having superior firepower, the less well-armored Alabama on the sides was sunk. The crew escaped safely. The wreck still lies on the seabed off Cherbourg.
