Three-masted 16th-century Carrack
Three-masted carrack. Hull length: approx. 35 m. Height from mast top to keel: approx. 30 m. Period engravings and documents found in the historical archives of the Naval Museum of Barcelona have allowed the reconstruction of the plans of a ship that fits, in terms of its lines, between the hull and the galleon, classifiable, due to the particular structures of the forecastle and sterncastle, among the carracks. It likely participated in a major maritime expedition around 1519, which led Fernando Cortez to conquer Mexico. The exterior galleries, including the balcony, the cabins beneath the small sterncastle, and the superstructures of the decks that provide for the installation of tents to protect from the sun, are clear signs of their use for transporting high-ranking passengers. Noteworthy are the colorful painted figureheads, purely decorative in function.
