The ship of the Pellegrini fathers
In 1609, the Pellegrini fathers, members of the English separatist church in contradiction with the national church because of their strict religious convictions, had gone to establish themselves in the Netherlands to escape the threat of imprisonment. They were determined to create a religious and civil community, and they chose to expatriate to the New World. Aboard the Mayflower, a small three-masted galleon of 180 tons, they arrived in 1620 on the shores of Virginia where they ratified the "Mayflower Compact," establishing a new state, the first of the United States of America.
