Three-masted barque by James Cook
James Cook, the great explorer of the Pacific, was born in 1728 into a peasant family. After a few years of experience on ships for coal transport, in 1775 Cook joined the British Royal Navy and almost immediately rose to the rank of "Master". In 1768, he was given command of an expedition in the South Pacific. The ship chosen for this venture was the Endeavour, a three-masted barque modified to accommodate the group of astronomers and their entourage, and for its sturdy structure adapted for dangerous voyages. The Endeavour set sail from Plymouth heading towards Cape Horn, then to Tahiti where it arrived in April 1769. After completing the necessary scientific observations, Cook continued on to New Zealand where he stayed throughout the month of March 1770, covering approximately 2400 miles of coastline.
