Original Mediterranean merchant ship
The origins of the Leudo are very uncertain. Hypotheses that probably have some truth content trace the Leudo back to a type of medieval vessel that had a hull with two masts inclined towards the bow with lateen sails. Subsequently, it would have lost the mizzen mast replaced by a bowsprit with jibs which made maneuvers easier. Characteristic is the shape of the hull with a very pronounced bilge. Its characteristics allowed it to face prohibitive weather conditions even for stronger hulls. It was a transport ship with a displacement of 15 to 20 tons, used for the trade of small businesses - hardware - agricultural tools - manufactured products - fabrics - in the Mediterranean waters.
