The Lexington was part of a small fleet of merchant brigantines that had been hastily converted into warships in Philadelphia in 1775/77, during the war against the English. Under the command of Captain John Barry, on April 7, 1776, it had a victorious naval engagement with the corvette Edward. In the same year, it was captured by the British frigate Pearl, but the crew managed, with a daring raid, to recover the ship and successfully return to Baltimore. The following year, the Lexington set sail for France. It participated with other ships in several wartime actions in the Bay of Biscay, the English Channel, and around the Irish coasts, capturing several English ships. On its return from France on September 20, 1777, it was captured by the English cutter Alert after a battle lasting more than three hours, during which the Lexington, having exhausted all ammunition, had to surrender to save the lives of the crew already decimated by the enemy's broadsides.
