English commercial brig of 1796
The English brig Portsmouth, built in 1796, was a typical example of a commercial unit adapted for privateering. Several nations at that time recognized and supported privateering by legalizing it with so-called "letters of marque" or "letters of reprisal" granted to those who, privately, could arm a ship and engage a crew.
