This 1/45 scale model, built in collaboration with the Cousteau Foundation, represents Calypso, Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau's legendary oceanographic vessel. Calypso, a symbol of ocean exploration and discovery, has played a crucial role in the advancement of marine research and the conservation of our precious marine environment.
Calypso was originally built as a minesweeper in 1943. However, she was purchased by Captain Cousteau in 1950, who transformed her into an oceanographic vessel and named her "Calypso" after the sea nymph in Greek mythology.
Main features:
1. Structure and design: Calypso had a robust steel hull and a distinctive design with a crane on deck to facilitate the deployment of diving and underwater exploration equipment. The model faithfully reflects these features, highlighting the functional design of the vessel.
2. Diving Equipment : Calypso was equipped with revolutionary diving equipment for its time, including the Aqualung scuba suit, which allowed divers to explore the ocean depths with greater freedom. The model could illustrate this iconic equipment, showing how it was stored and used on board. The vessel is 42 meters long and weighs 360 tonnes, is powered by 2 x 600 hp diesel engines and has a maximum speed of 13 knots.
3. Research laboratories: On board Calypso, research laboratories have enabled scientists to analyse samples taken from the seabed. The model could highlight these areas dedicated to scientific research and analysis.
4. Exploration and Discovery : Calypso has travelled the world's oceans, contributing to major discoveries such as the exploration of the site of the wreck of Louis XIV's ship, La Lune. The model could include elements that recall some of the ship's most emblematic expeditions and discoveries.
Calypso and the work of Captain Cousteau have played an essential role in raising public awareness of the importance of preserving the oceans and marine life. Their documentaries and research have inspired generations of people to explore and protect our fragile marine ecosystem.
In conclusion, Captain Cousteau's model of Calypso is much more than just a physical representation of a ship. It embodies the spirit of exploration, innovation and preservation that characterized the work of Captain Cousteau and his team. This model reminds us of the importance of understanding and preserving the oceans for future generations.
