Corsair ship from 1775
During the Revolutionary War (1774-76), some ships were commissioned by rebellious colonial governments to raid British commerce everywhere, and to capture, when possible, British ships. At the time of the revolution, Benjamin Franklin was ambassador to France. He obtained permission to purchase two French privateers through a major shipowner. These privateers were the predecessors of the Baltimore schooners. They were painted black to make them practically invisible at night. They were named Prince Noir and Princesse Noire. Their crews were Portuguese but the captain was American. They raided English merchant ships in English coastal waters and for over a year, they destroyed British trade with the world.
