American clipper of 1851
The clipper was born in the United States around 1820, as the final stage in the evolution of the sailing ship, to meet the demands of the American mercantile class, when it realized that the future of commerce lay on the sea. American builders created a completely new ship, without imitating the patterns and models of the old continent, and they immediately achieved results that influenced the techniques of shipyards worldwide. The Flying Cloud, a masterpiece by the builder Donald McKay, was built in East Boston in 1851. Soon it gained a good reputation during the "Gold Rush" in California, covering the distance from New York to San Francisco in the record time of 88 days, 22 hours, and a half.
